About

Sunflower Flat is a Game & Fish Commission owned property on the Kaibab National Forest. This beautiful 160 acre marsh offers the opportunity to see waterfowl and shorebirds in wet years. 

At the site, there are a number of interpretive signs to help visitors understand this high elevation wet meadow habitat, and how to be a responsible visitor.

What You'll See

Extensive wetland restoration work has been completed to improve habitat for winter migrants and resident birds. Sunflower Flat Wildlife Area is now an ideal spot for watching resident and migratory waterfowl. Northern Arizona's high-elevation lakes typically attract winter travelers in great numbers each year. 

Bald eagles, osprey, and other birds of prey also inhabit the area. Wildlife friendly fencing has also increased the possibility of seeing pronghorn, elk, turkey or deer sighting. Reptiles and amphibians that may be encountered during the warmer months include greater short-horned and plateau lizards, gophersnake, Arizona black rattlesnake, Arizona toad, canyon and Arizona treefrogs. 

Getting There

Travel west from Flagstaff on I-40 approximately 15 miles to Parks exit. Turn right and proceed south on Forest Road 141 for approximately 12 miles. Turn left onto Forest Road 109 and take 109 south about 3 miles to Forest Road 14. Turn right and drive south and west 1 mile. Look for Forest Road 15A on the left. Sunflower Flat is about 1/2 mile down this road.

None. There is a Forest Service bike area near the Wildlife Area. 

Access Info 

The roads to Sunflower Flat are all dirt roads and may be rough and difficult to drive on during wet weather, they may also be closed during the winter months. 

Hunting Info

This area may be utilized by hunters during open seasons. Waterfowl hunting occurs October through January.
