About
The Nature Conservancy's Hart Prairie Preserve is a truly unique landscape at the base of the magnificent San Francisco Peaks. At an elevation of 8500', it boasts Arizona's largest known Bebb willow community, a rare wet meadow riparian habitat, aspen groves and mixed conifer forest stands, with the tallest peak in Arizona as a stunning backdrop. There is also a rich human history, as the 130 year-old homestead at Hart Prairie was the first stop on the Flagstaff to Grand Canyon stagecoach route.
What You'll See
The high diversity of forest and grassland types within the San Francisco Peaks supports over 80 species of native mammals, over 250 plant species, and over 120 species of birds, including many neotropical migrants, old-growth dependent birds, and a wide variety of raptors.

Guided Nature walks
Join the Nature Conservancy this summer for guided nature walks at Hart Prairie Preserve in Northern Arizona. The walks will take place on 7/14, 7/28 or 8/18 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and will begin at the barn at the northernmost parking lot.
Learn about the natural and human history of the Flagstaff area, including its geology and the formation of the San Francisco Peaks, Aspen ecology, Bebb Willows and TNC’s ongoing conservation work at the preserve. Hikers of all levels are welcome, but be prepared for the 2-mile walk on uneven terrain.
The walks are free and open to the public, but space is limited; registration is required. Sign up here or below before attending. Note: this is a guided walk limited to the nature trail, and members of the public will not have access to the historic buildings in the preserve.
Please bring sturdy shoes, a hat, sunscreen, plenty of water and binoculars if desired. During monsoon season, in late July through August, be prepared for rain and bring the necessary equipment for inclement weather. When navigating, follow the Google Maps directions to "Hart Prairie Preserve" (there is no street address) and look for the front gate with a TNC logo on it.
